Welcome to the GCRF Cultural Heritage Hub Project Portal

The GCRF Cultural Heritage Hub is an interdisciplinary consolidator project coordinated by the University of St Andrews.

Led by Dr Richard Bates, School of Earth & Environmental Sciences, the hub works in collaboration with local communities and partner organisations in Tanzania, Peru, Costa Rica, and Ukraine. It aims to research the value of cultural heritage to local communities by:

  • Understanding the ways cultural heritage can be represented, preserved and developed to ensure sustainability and well-being for local communities.
  • Widening cultural heritage participation through new community-led initiatives both locally in communities and globally across the hub.
  • Preserving and represent intangible and tangible cultural heritage in digital and physical form.
  • Inspire collaboration for sustainable partnerships between the University, communities and global institutions.

The hub will create a shared platform for researchers to share their knowledge and experiences via a new ‘South-South’ and/or Global online conversation series. Enable community, researcher and wider public participation through innovative technologies; a mobile app and a database of intangible and tangible cultural heritage.

The project is funded by the Scottish Funding Council’s Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF).
